2nd Rainfall Simulator Workshop

"Towards harmonisation in the use of rainfall simulators"

22-24 May 2023, Coimbra, Portugal

About
Beginning with the first workshop held in 2011 in Trier, Germany, this workshop aims at bringing together researchers whose interest includes rainfall simulation studies. Rainfall simulators are important experimental tools in hydrology and geomorphology studies and have been widely used both in the laboratory and in the field for accomplishing a wide range of research objectives and purposes. The literature reveals the existence of more than 250 different rainfall simulator setups that exhibit a significant diversity in the simulators’ type, sizing, form and operation methodologies, which have been developed and adapted to address specific research demands. This flexibility, which is usually seen as a major advantage, can also have several drawbacks, in particular numerous difficulties for comparing results and outputs obtained from different rainfall simulators studies, using different simulators’ designs.
Scope and Aim
This workshop aims at contributing to the identification of harmonised best practices in rainfall simulation studies (e.g., alignment in design criteria, working procedures and data collection), while appreciating that variation in design characteristics should exist to allow rainfall simulators to be best suited for different research purposes. Such understanding would considerably enhance our capacity to characterise and compare rainfall simulators and results. Harmonisation would thus add value to simulated rainfall-based research as synergies can arise from comparing different studies, while this has been hampered so far. Different research experiences and viewpoints will be shared and discussed during the workshop, pursuing further developments in this field.

There will be a practical session dedicated to demonstrating the use of rainfall simulators by authors.
